For the second edition of the Imagine Chemistry challenge, we invited innovators from around the world to help us solve real life chemistry challenges faced by our business. From over 150 submissions, we selected 20 teams to join us at the finals event which is currently taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden.

During the second day of the Challenge the finalists faced yet another busy day filled with stimulating and educational talks from AkzoNobel leaders mixed with last minute expert sessions to help them finalize their proposals.

Johan Landfors talks about inspiration

The morning program got off to an inspiring start as Johan Landfors, leader of our Polymer Chemistry business, shared his personal take on passion, inspiration, and value and how they should shape the way we do business. He made a compelling case for the importance of sustainability to our company strategy, concluding: “I’m a strong believer that we can help make the planet a better place to live.

Marco Waas explaining AkzoNobel’s approach to innovation

Mid-morning we checked in with Global RD&I Director Peter Nieuwenhuizen to see how things are going so far. According to him the discussions have been lively: “We’re really grilling each other to find the value we can create for us as an organization, for them as finalists, but also for our customers and for society at large.” You can see an interview with Peter here.

Following some final masters classes and a quick ice cream and photo break, the finalist teams headed back to their rooms to finalize their proposals.  The winners will be announced tomorrow morning, so tune in to find out who we’ll be working with to create a more sustainable future!
